Ancient Spiritual Practices:
What are these anyway?

Desert

A long time ago, in a land far, far away, there lived some people called the Desert Fathers and Mothers and they were pretty intense about cultivating intimacy with God.  A tradition of Christian spirituality grew from their way of life and teachings….this tradition is called the Contemplative tradition.  In this section of the website, I will be offering various contemplative exercises each month that have been useful for other God followers over the centuries.

Here’s a few key things to note:
These practices don’t make you closer to God –
What they do is open you up to God.  Being open is the key.  In openness God can speak and we can actually hear him.  Don’t expect some supernatural whirlwind around you as you practice these.  However, don’t be surprised if something kinda funky does happen.  The key is to not think you’re doing something wrong if something miraculous doesn’t happen.
            Learn to listen.
As a culture, we stink at listening.  We usually only pay attention when we are entertained.  God doesn’t do a dog and pony show to get us to listen.  Instead God uses little “nudgings” in our soul.  Listen to those nudgings.

I’ll give you specific instructions on how to do these ancient practices in each link.  I hope you enjoy these times of opening before God.
